Medical Laboratory Technicians is a programme under Medical Laboratory Science Profession. The programme is designed to train and produce clinical laboratory service personnel to meet present and project service needs in primary and secondary health care services in ECOWAS member states.

Medical Laboratory Technician is a three (3) years intensive semester based programmes with a strong practical medical laboratory exposure component.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

At the end of the training programme, the Medical Laboratory Diploma holder should have the basic competence in the following areas:

  1. KNOWLEDGE: at the end of each course, the grandaunt should have acquired knowledge that will enable him/her to work under the supervision of qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  2. SKILLS: The graduate should be able to handle process and perform simple systematic analysis of routine specimens he/she receives.
  3. ATTITUDE: The grandaunt should appreciate the importance of his/her role in the chain of activity within the diagnosis He/she should know the proper reporting, procedure and action for any sample received inj a professional manner that ensures the spirit of teamwork and skillful communication with his/her peers and supervisory Laboratory Personnel qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  4. COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM: The grandaunt should be fully competent in planning and managing the workload. This comprises organizing the work flow and proper utilization of space, instrumentation and resources in ensuring the production of accurate and reliable results for effective diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES

Students who successfully complete this programme should be able to;

  1. Seek employment in a clinical laboratory setting with the ability to perform routine laboratory procedures in each department with accuracy and precision.
  2. Recognize normal and abnormal test results and take necessary action with critical values.
  3. Perform and interpret basic maintenance quality control procedures
